Fairness

I received a last-minute email last night notifying me that my kid would be receiving a certificate at the school assembly this morning at 9 am. I made it, and I couldn't be prouder! But why do we feel compelled to attend every single event in our children's lives? Why is it that we, as parents, believe showing up to every occasion is the benchmark for being a good parent? Is it merely about proving our presence by taking a few pictures and smiling from afar?

Let’s be honest—who genuinely enjoys sitting through these events? With so many assemblies in primary school, it feels overwhelming. The school’s large population means I have to attend multiple gatherings throughout the day, which takes up a significant chunk of my time. Should I view it as a silver lining that I’m not responsible for anyone during these events? At least I can get wickedly stoned, unwind and enjoy a moment of peace for that hour.

Honestly, they couldn't have chosen a better recipient for the 'Fairness' certificate. I'm incredibly proud of him, and I'm grateful that his teacher is one of the great ones—someone who recognizes his true spirit instead of merely focusing on his high energy.
