Yay for the Fun Uncle

My Ex's Parenting Style Is 'Fun Uncle'

You know the type. The parent who shows up with ice cream, no bedtime, and the energy of a golden retriever — while you're at home being the villain who enforces vegetables and homework.

That's the dynamic. I'm the structure. He's the fun uncle who happens to share their DNA.

And for a long time, it ATE me alive. I'd spend all week being the bad guy — the routines, the rules, the “eat three more bites” — and then they'd come home from his place sugared up, schedule-free, and looking at me like I personally invented bedtime as a form of torture.

Then one day my oldest said something that stopped me cold: “Mom, you're the one who makes everything work. He's just... the fun part.”

Kid. Ten years old. Dropping wisdom like a tiny therapist.

Here's what I finally figured out: I don't have to compete with Fun Uncle. Fun Uncle doesn't do dentist appointments. Fun Uncle doesn't know which kid needs the seam-free socks or who can't sleep without the hallway light. Fun Uncle is a sometimes-food. I'm the whole meal.

Being the stable parent is thankless in the moment. Nobody writes you a thank-you card for enforcing a bedtime. But years from now, they won't remember who bought the ice cream. They'll remember who showed up. Every single day.

So to every mama out there playing the villain while someone else plays the hero: you're not the villain. You're the foundation. And foundations don't get applause — they get stood on. Proudly.

Who else is the 'mean one' in their coparenting dynamic? Sound off. We're in good company.
