Sleep Deprevation

The 2 AM Worry Spiral (and How I Get Back to Sleep)

It's 2 AM. The house is finally quiet. And my brain — my traitor brain — decides NOW is the perfect time for a full operational review of my entire life.

You know the spiral. It starts small: did I sign that permission slip? Then it escalates: permission slip → school → am I doing enough for the kids → the kids' future → MY future → the mortgage → mortality → why did I say that weird thing in 2019. By 2:40 I'm planning my own funeral and redesigning the kitchen.

For years I fought it. Tossed, turned, got mad at myself for being awake, which — shocker — did not help me sleep.

Here's what I do now — not advice, just what's worked for this particular overthinking mom. First: I get up. Lying there marinating in worry just trains my brain that bed = worry place. I go to the couch, dim light, boring book. No phone — the phone is a slot machine of other people's emergencies.

Second: I do the brain dump. Everything swirling gets written down — permission slips, bills, weird 2019 comments, all of it. Once it's on paper, my brain finally believes it doesn't have to hold it anymore. Paper holds it. Paper is very responsible.

Third: I talk to myself like I'd talk to a friend. “Okay, love. The mortgage is paid. The kids are breathing. 2019 is over. Let's go.” Corny? Deeply. Effective? Weirdly, yes.

And if all else fails: I make a deal with the spiral. “You get ten more minutes, then we sleep.” Giving worry a container — instead of letting it have the whole night — changed everything for me.

2 AM crew: what's YOUR spiral's favorite topic? Mine's a rotating menu, but 'did I lock the truck' is a classic.
