Hair Wash Day Chaos
In a house with multiple long-haired kids, hair wash day isn't a routine. It's an event. It requires scheduling, supplies, snacks, and the emotional resilience of a crisis negotiator.
It starts with the Announcement, which is received like a declaration of war. You'd think I'd suggested we shave their heads. (I have never suggested this. Out loud.)
Then: the Detangling. This is the part where I question every life choice that led to long hair on children. The brush. The tears. The “YOU'RE HURTING ME” — I'm barely touching it, baby, the KNOT is hurting you, I'm just the messenger. We have a spray. We have a special comb. We have a system. The system works 70% of the time, which in this house is basically a miracle.
The actual wash is a splash zone. I don't know how — the child is IN the tub, I am OUTSIDE the tub, and yet I am somehow wetter than they are. Physics doesn't apply on hair wash day. I've accepted this.
Then comes the conditioning, the rinsing (“ lean BACK, baby, BACK”), and the final negotiation: air dry or blow dry? Air dry means frizz. Blow dry means another twenty minutes and someone falling asleep in the chair. There are no good options. Only less-bad ones.
But here's the secret part — the part I don't say out loud enough: hair wash day is also one of the most tender times we have. It's twenty unhurried minutes of touch. Of “tell me about your day” while the conditioner sits. Of little heads leaning back into my hands, trusting me completely.
In the middle of the chaos, it's connection. The brush strokes are love with extra steps.
Long-hair parents: what's your detangling survival rating? And does anyone else end up wetter than the kid, or is my tub just haunted?
