Finding a Babysitter as a Mom of Six (Good Luck)
Finding a babysitter for one kid is a search. Finding a babysitter for SIX kids is a mythological quest. I'm basically looking for a unicorn who does dishes.
The math alone is disqualifying. Standard babysitter rates times six kids times the hours? I'd need to take out a loan to go on a date. At some point the sitter costs more than the evening, and I'm doing financial calculus in the driveway like: is this movie worth $140? (It's not. Nothing is. We stay home.)
Then there's the interview process. “So, the baby needs—” and I watch their eyes glaze over somewhere around child number three's bedtime routine. I've started making a binder. A BINDER. With tabs. Color-coded. The last candidate looked at it and said “...is this a joke?” It was not a joke. It was a cry for help disguised as organization.
The real issue: it's not just six kids, it's six kids with six different needs. The toddler who only sleeps with the white noise AND the hallway light. The one who needs the seam-free socks. The one who will negotiate bedtime like a tiny lawyer. The preteen who insists he doesn't need a sitter while absolutely needing a sitter.
And the guilt! Oh, the guilt of leaving. I spend the first hour of every rare night out checking my phone. Then I remember: the sitter survived the binder. The sitter is fine. I should order dessert.
Here's what I actually believe: moms of big families deserve nights out just as much as anyone — MORE, arguably. And the village matters. The aunties, the grandmas, the trusted friends who'll take the chaos for an evening? They're not doing me a favor. They're keeping me human.
So this is my thank-you to every person who's ever watched all six and lived to tell the tale. You're not a babysitter. You're a hero with my spare key.
Big-family moms: what's your sitter situation? Binder people, report in. I know you're out there.
