The Soft Start

Published on 2 November 2026 at 08:20

If your Monday already feels like a test you failed before breakfast, I want to offer you a different idea: you don't have to earn a good week by punishing yourself through a hard morning.

I used to start every week with a list so long it needed its own list. Clean the whole house. Fix every routine. Become a brand-new woman by Tuesday. By Wednesday I was exhausted, behind, and convinced I was the problem. I wasn't the problem. The plan was the problem. It was too big to actually live in.

Here's the tool I use now. I call it the soft start. Instead of asking, "How do I fix my whole week today?" I ask, "What is one kind, doable thing I can do first?" Just one. Drink the water before the third coffee. Put on the song that makes you feel like yourself. Text one friend back.

A soft start is not laziness. It's strategy. When you start gently, you actually start. When you start with a punishment plan, you stall, you spiral, and then you spend the whole week catching up to a version of yourself that never existed.

And here's the part that changed things for me: a soft start gives your kids a softer mom, too. They don't need a perfect Monday. They need a mom who isn't already running on empty by 9 a.m.

So try it today. Pick one small, kind first step — not ten, not a whole new life, just one — and let that be enough to begin. You can always add more later. You cannot pour from an empty cup, but you can absolutely start by filling it one sip at a time.

Quick note: this is coaching, not therapy. If the weight you are carrying feels heavy every single day, please talk to someone who can help you carry it.

Your turn: what is your one soft start today? Tell me the small thing — I want to cheer for the tiny wins, too.
