There are few lessons that have stuck with me as strongly as my dad's perspective on hickeys.
His views were quite extreme, and I didn't fully grasp them until my child came home with one. Suddenly, my dad's words echoed in my mind.
"Anyone who leaves a mark like that doesn't respect you," he used to say, equating it to abuse.
In fact, I only came home with a hickey once.
Now, witnessing one on my own child feels surreal yet undeniable; after all, a bruise is a bruise, no matter how it was earned.
