Madnesss or Magic??

Holiday Madness vs. Holiday Magic

The holidays with six kids are two things at once: pure magic and pure madness. Often in the same hour.

The magic: little faces on Christmas morning. The absolute electricity of it. The toddler who loses his mind over wrapping paper — not the gift, the PAPER — and it's the funniest, sweetest thing you've ever seen. The big kids trying to act cool but vibrating with excitement. The traditions: the same movies, the same chaos, the same me crying during the same scene every year.

The madness: the shopping. Oh god, the shopping. Six kids, each with a list, each with expectations calibrated by YouTube ads. My budget spreadsheet has a tab called “December” and I don't open it after November because I value my mental health.

Then there's the scheduling — divorced-parent holiday logistics deserve their own post, but let's just say the calendar looks like air traffic control. Who's where on the 25th. Who gets the morning. The negotiations. The performance of cheerfulness through all of it.

And the food! I cook like I'm feeding a village, because I AM feeding a village. There are dietary preferences now — preferences! – and someone always announces a new one on December 23rd. “I'm vegetarian now.” Since WHEN, Kevin? (Not his real name. But the vegetarianism is real.)

Here's what I've landed on, after years of holiday whiplash: lower the bar on the production, raise the bar on the presence. The kids won't remember the tablescape. They'll remember that mom was actually IN the room — not in the kitchen stress-crying into the gravy.

So this year: simpler food, fewer gifts, more couch time. The magic was never in the madness. It was in the faces. It was always the faces.

What's your holiday hill to die on — the one tradition you'd fight for? Mine's the matching pajamas. Non-negotiable.
