Mom Friends: Finding Them in the Wild

Making friends as an adult is hard. Making mom friends — real ones, not just “we stand near each other at pickup” ones — is a special kind of vulnerable.

Because here's the thing: mom friendship requires confessing things. You can't bond over small talk about the weather. You bond at 10 PM over text: “is it normal that I hid in my car for 20 minutes after pickup?” And she replies “only 20? rookie numbers” — and just like that, you're sisters.

My mom friends came from the wildest places. One from the trenches of the school pickup line (see post #9 — I'm a scholar). One from a kids' birthday party where we hid in the kitchen together avoiding the balloon arch. One from the internet, which sounds sketchy but turned out to be the most “no notes” friendship of my life.

The vetting process is intense, though. You start with the safe topics — sleep schedules, school drama. Then someone drops a real one: “I'm not okay today.” And you watch what happens next. The real ones lean in. The others change the subject back to fundraisers. Noted. Catalogued. Moving on.

What I've learned: you don't need twenty mom friends. You need two or three who'll answer the 2 AM text. Who'll tell you the truth — “girl, that's not a phase, that's a Tuesday, you're fine” — instead of the Instagram version. Who'll show up with coffee when the wheels come off, no questions, no judgment.

And here's the part I'm proudest of: I've become that friend for other moms now. The one who says “me too” instead of “have you tried.” The work I did on myself didn't just change my parenting — it changed my friendships. Healed people find each other. It's basically physics.

How did YOU meet your mom bestie? I need origin stories. The weirder the better.
