What 12 is like

Raising a 12-Year-Old Boy (Attitude Included)

Twelve. The age where your sweet baby boy becomes... a preteen. A creature of grunts, eye-rolls, and opinions he definitely didn't have last year.

My oldest is twelve, and parenting him right now is like negotiating with a tiny, emotional diplomat from a country whose customs I don't understand. “How was school?” “Fine.” “What did you do?” “Stuff.” “Can you elaborate on the stuff?” *audible sigh, leaves room.* Riveting journalism, kid.

The attitude isn't personal — I keep telling myself this, usually while staring at the ceiling. It's developmental. His brain is under construction. The eye-roll is just... scaffolding.

But here's what gets me: underneath the “whatever” is still MY boy. The one who leaves me notes. The one who — when he thinks no one's watching — is gentle with his little siblings in a way that melts me. The one who asked me last week, quiet and serious: “Mom, am I a good brother?” And I got to look him in the eye and say: “you're the BEST brother.” And for a second, the twelve-year-old armor cracked, and he was seven again.

My strategy, such as it is: pick the battles like they're precious resources, because they are. Hygiene? Non-negotiable. Respect? Non-negotiable. The sighing? Let it go. The door-slamming? Address it once, calmly, then let it go. The hair? ...I've decided the hair is a journey he's on alone.

And I tell him the truth: “I know you're figuring out who you are. I'm right here while you do it. Even when you're rude about it.” Boundaries with love. Every time.

Because one day — SOON, too soon — he'll be grown, and I'll miss the grunts. I'll miss all of it. Even the sighing. Okay, maybe not the sighing.

Parents of preteens: what's your best 'underneath the attitude' moment? I collect them like treasures.
