Look at this kid.
This morning Jayden was nervous. Not cool-kid nervous — the real kind, the kind where your stomach is doing parkour before you've even touched the start line. I got him to the kids registration tent early, dry change packed, QR confirmation screenshotted like a proper race mom.
And then he went out there and did 3 kilometers of mud, walls, ropes, and bad ideas — and finished 23rd in 41 minutes.
Twenty-third. In forty-one minutes. His FIRST Spartan Kids race. Say it out loud. Most grown adults won't even touch an obstacle course, and my twelve-year-old just ate one for breakfast.
That grin in the photo? That's the grin of a kid who beat the butterflies. He was scared at the start line and proud at the finish line, and if that's not the whole point of doing hard things, I don't know what is.
Tomorrow it's my turn — Sprint 5K, my own forty-one minutes of glory or demise, jury's still out. But tonight I'm just sitting here replaying that medal moment in my head. Proud is too small a word. My kid is a Spartan.
Love you, Jayden. Mama's at the finish line — today, tomorrow, and every hard thing after.
