The Done List

My to-do list is a weapon I use against myself. It never gets shorter. It just sits there, judging me, adding items faster than I can cross them off.

So tonight I am flipping it. Instead of a to-do list, I am writing a done list.

A done list is everything you already did today, written down before bed. Not the big stuff only. All of it. Kept everyone alive. Got the kids where they needed to be. Answered the email I was avoiding. Found pumpkins. Showed up when showing up was the hardest part.

Here is why it works: your brain believes evidence. A to-do list is evidence of everything you have not done, which is a rigged trial. A done list is evidence of what you actually carried today, and on the days when the voice in your head says you did nothing, the list gets to argue back.

It does not have to be pretty. It does not have to be long. Five lines on the back of an envelope counts. The point is not productivity. The point is proof.

So before you fall into bed tonight, write it down. Not what is left. What is done. Let the list say what you will not say about yourself: you did a lot today, even if it does not look like much from the inside.
