Bedtime in this house is 8:30. That is the rule. The kids know it, I know it, the dog knows it. And yet, every single night at 8:27, somebody suddenly discovers they are starving.
Not hungry. Starving. Like they have not eaten since the dawn of time. Like dinner was a myth and the three helpings they had were a fever dream.
It starts with one brave soul. "Mom, I'm hungry." And then the others smell weakness like sharks smell blood. Suddenly the whole house is starving. The toddler wants crackers. The big kid wants a sandwich. Somebody wants cereal, which is apparently a bedtime food now, and somebody else wants an apple but only if I cut it, and only in triangles, and only if I do not take too long because the hunger is very serious and possibly life-threatening.
This is not about food. This is a negotiation. Bedtime is the deadline and they are the union reps, and I am management, and management is tired.
So here is my move. I keep it boring. One small thing, same thing every night. A banana, a handful of crackers, a glass of milk. No menu, no debate, no custom orders. You want a snack? That is the snack. Take it or take yourself to bed.
And you know what? It works. Mostly. There are still nights when somebody tries to renegotiate — "but what about toast?" — and I just point at the clock like it is a referee.
Then they are finally down. Doors shut, lights off, house quiet for the first time all day. And that is when I get my own moment. Just me on the porch with a little exhale, my mommy's magic flowers, and the sweet silence of a house full of sleeping kids who are definitely not starving anymore.
Mamas, what is the wildest bedtime snack request you have ever gotten? I need to know I am not the only one running a midnight diner.
