Rest Is Maintenance, Not a Reward

Somewhere along the way, a lot of us learned that rest is something you earn. Finish the laundry, answer the emails, clean the kitchen, survive the day — then, maybe, you get to sit down.

I want to offer you a different way to think about it: rest is maintenance, not a reward.

You do not wait for your car to fall apart before you change the oil. You do not wait for your phone to die before you charge it. But somehow, with ourselves, we run on empty until we break down, and then we wonder why everything feels so hard.

Here is the reframe. Rest is what keeps the machine running. Ten minutes with your feet up is not lazy. Going to bed on time is not quitting. Saying "I am taking a break" is not weakness — it is the thing that lets you show up tomorrow instead of snapping at everyone by noon.

Try this. Pick one small rest that happens before the work is done, not after. Sit down with your coffee before the dishes. Step outside for five minutes of fresh air before the next errand. Rest first, then work — and notice how much steadier you feel.

And if the guilt shows up — and it will, because old habits are loud — try answering it with the truth: I am not resting because I finished everything. I am resting so I can keep going.

Quick note: this is coaching, not therapy. If the weight you are carrying feels heavy every single day, please talk to someone you trust, or reach out to a professional. You deserve support, not just strategies.

Your turn: what is one small rest you could take today, before everything is done? Tell me — I want to hear yours.
