Halloween is eighteen days away, and in my house, that means costume season has officially become a contact sport.
Six kids. Six costumes. Six wildly different visions of who they want to be, and absolutely zero of them willing to compromise.
We started with a family meeting. Cute idea, right? Like we're a functional little unit that can make a plan. By minute four, someone was crying because someone else wanted to be the SAME THING, which is apparently the deepest betrayal known to childhood.
Then came the store trip. Picture it: me, six kids, a Halloween aisle picked over like vultures got to it first. The one they wanted? Sold out. The backup? Sold out. The backup-backup? Available in size toddler and size adult-man, nothing in between. Somehow we ended up with a costume bag that cost more than my weekly groceries and a promise from one child that they are DEFINITELY keeping this one, they SWEAR, do not return it.
That child has changed their mind three times since Sunday.
And the toddler? The toddler just wants to wear footie pajamas and be carried. Honestly? Respect. He cracked the code. Maximum candy, minimum effort, zero chafing.
Here's the thing nobody tells you about parenting through October: it is the longest audition of your life and you did not sign up for any of it. School costume parades. Classroom parties. The pumpkin that has to be carved but not TOO scary but also cool enough. Six of everything. Every single year.
So tonight, after the negotiations ended and the house went quiet, I took my little exhale out on the porch. Bedtime done. Costume decisions (mostly) made. The cool night air, ten minutes of nobody needing anything from me, and my magic flowers doing their quiet work.
Mama earned that one. Halloween can come. We're ready-ish.
How many costume changes are YOUR kids averaging this year? Tell me I'm not the only one buying a backup.
