Picture Day Hair: A Tragedy in Three Acts

Published on 27 October 2026 at 08:43

Picture Day morning in my house should come with a warning label and a stunt double.

Act One: The Plan. I lay out outfits the night before like I have my life together. Shirts without stains. Hair brushed. Smiles practised. I go to bed genuinely believing tomorrow will be different. It will not be different. It has never been different.

Act Two: The Rebellion. One kid’s hair has decided, overnight, to become a weather event. Another one has changed outfits three times and is now wearing something I have never seen before in my life, which means it came from the back of a closet or possibly another dimension. Somebody cries because their part is on the wrong side. As if hair has a legal address.

I’m out there with a brush, a spray bottle, and the patience of a saint on her last nerve, negotiating like lives depend on it. “Just let me do the front pieces. That’s it. The front pieces and we are FREE.” Meanwhile the clock laughs at me. The bus does not care about your cowlick, kid.

Act Three: The Surrender. I send them out the door with hair that is, at best, a group effort. Not perfect. Not catalogue-ready. But clean, combed-ish, and attached to kids who are fed, loved, and mostly on time. And you know what? When those photos come back, I won’t see flyaways. I’ll see their little faces, exactly as they were on an ordinary Tuesday in October.

That’s the whole secret of Picture Day, and honestly of motherhood: the photo was never going to be perfect. The memory is perfect anyway.

My payoff comes after bedtime, when the house finally goes quiet and the hairbrush can rest. I step out onto the porch for a little exhale — just me, the cool night air, and mommy’s magic flowers. Mama survived Picture Day. Mama always does.

Picture Day mamas: what is your Act Two disaster? The cowlick, the outfit swap, the tears over a part? Tell me I’m not the only one negotiating with a hairbrush at 7 AM.
